Potential for Kelantan as MD2 pineapple hub
PASIR PUTEH,. Kelantan has the potential to become the biggest pineapple producer for the MD2 variety in the next few years, said Kelantan Pineapple Industry Board (LPNM) director Mohd Zamani Ab Ghani.
He said this is due to the fact that there are many hilly areas suitable for planting this variety, and there are now more than 83 hectares of MD2 crops cultivated by more than 100 farmers and smallholders since it was introduced in 2016.
“The response to the crop until now is very encouraging, especially among retired government officers such as teachers, farmers and smallholders,” he told reporters after officiating the MD2 Pineapple Mini Carnival here.
Mohd Zamani said the variety is different from other pineapples because it is sweeter and is pest-resistant.
“The pineapple variety is able to generate income of between RM8,000 to RM25,000 per hectare if cultivated properly,” he said.
As a marketing strategy, he plans to open special shops on the MD2 variety in each district in Kelantan before exporting to other states and so far four stores have been set up in Kuala Krai, Tanah Merah, Jeli and Pasir Mas which covers Rantau Panjang.
He also said that the Ministry of Agriculture and Food Industries had approved an allocation of RM1.8 million, including providing seeds and consultation services throughout the year to develop the pineapple as a major crop in Kelantan.
He said the Young Agropreneur Scheme has also been set up to encourage youths to venture into the agricultural industry by providing assistance of RM20,000 to those who cultivate the variety on at least 0.46 hectare of land.
